November: A Month of Gratitude

Welcome to November—a time when the air turns crisp, leaves crunch underfoot, and we shift our focus to gratitude. As a health and wellness coach, a parent, and a woman navigating the waves of perimenopause, I find this month to be a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the blessings in my life. So, let’s dive into the heart of gratitude and explore how we can all embrace this powerful practice!

What Is Gratitude?

Gratitude is more than just a polite gesture; it’s a profound recognition of the good in our lives. It’s about pausing to appreciate what we often take for granted—whether that’s a warm cup of coffee in the morning or the laughter of our children. Studies have shown that cultivating gratitude can boost our mood, improve relationships, and even enhance physical health. It’s like a superpower we can tap into to enrich our daily lives!

My Personal Gratitude Practices

Over the years, I’ve developed a couple of gratitude practices that truly resonate with me. One of my favorites is the Gratitude Countdown, which I learned from a Calm Practice. This exercise is best done with a partner, and it’s simple yet powerful. We start at 10 and count down to 1, alternating back and forth to share specific things we’re grateful for in that moment. The key is to be specific! Instead of saying, “I’m grateful for my family,” I might say, “I’m grateful for the moments in morning when we share our hopes for the day.” This practice not only deepens our connection but also heightens our awareness of the beauty around us.

Another practice that has become a staple for me is gratitude journaling. Throughout November, I challenge myself to write down something I’m grateful for each day without repeating myself. This forces me to really dig deep and find unique moments of appreciation. For example, rather than just saying, “I’m grateful for my children,” I would write, “I’m grateful for the hugs my children give me after a long day, reminding me that I am loved.” This practice fills my heart and my journal with rich details that make gratitude feel alive and vibrant.

A Legacy of Gratitude

My gratitude journey began in childhood. I remember my grandma telling me that if I had trouble falling asleep, I should talk to God and share all the things I was grateful for. This comforting ritual stuck with me, guiding me through various phases of my life.

As I matured and faced life’s inevitable challenges—like the loss of loved ones and personal health scares—my appreciation for the little things intensified. One memory that stands out is from my late 20s, when I experienced a health scare filled with uncertainty. After months of tests and anxiety, I received the relief of a misdiagnosis. The following morning, as I walked into work, I was overwhelmed with gratitude just to be walking, breathing, and feeling the sun on my face. That moment taught me to cherish every detail, big or small.
